From Playroom to Progress Notes: Clinical and Ethical Documentation in Play Therapy

Content Description:
Documentation is an ethical responsibility and a critical clinical skill for play therapists. This workshop strengthens documentation practices that are developmentally appropriate, clinically meaningful, and ethically sound. Participants will review ethical standards related to play therapy documentation, including confidentiality, informed consent, accuracy and legal defensibility. The golden thread concept is introduced, illustrating alignment across assessment, treatment goals, progress notes, parent consultations, and treatment summaries. Attendees will learn to translate therapeutic play into concise progress notes and parent consultation notes while balancing child confidentiality with caregiver collaboration.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the critical importance of ethical documentation in play therapy practice and its role in protecting both clients and practitioners.
2. Create seamless connections in play therapy documentation by linking assessment findings, treatment goals, session documentation, parent consultation notes, and closing summaries while utilizing “Golden Thread” concepts.
3. Demonstrate writing progress notes that accurately reflect therapeutic play therapy work with child clients.
4. Identify effective strategies for documenting parent consultations to support collaboration and transparency.

About the Presenter:
Leah Fowlkes Miller, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S™ is the owner and founder of the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts established in 2001 and the Institute for Counselor Development in El Paso, Texas founded in 2015. She has worked with families, couples, adolescents, and children for over 25 years. She completed her master’s in counseling at Webster University and did a post-graduate study at the University of Oklahoma in art therapy. Leah received her PhD from the University of North Texas in Counseling and Higher Education with a specialty in play therapy.
