Cultural Humility: A Pathway to Self-Growth

Summary:
The state of Texas requires 3 hours of training in cultural diversity or competency. Cultural humility is practice that requires counselors to continually engage in self-reflection as life-long learners. This presentation will address several defining and developing specific skills to develop a deeper understanding of cultural humility. The presentation will include direct instruction, collaborative group learning, and discussion groups.
Objectives
- Participants will create a working definition of cultural humility by comparing cultural humility and cultural competence.
- Participants will discern broaching, a cultural strategy used to explore the complexity of culture in counseling relationships.
- Participants will assess the impact of ruptures in the counseling relationship based on one’s biases, assumptions, and judgements of others.

About the presenter
Leah Fowlkes Miller, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S™ is the owner and founder of the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts in El Paso, Texas. She has worked with families, couples, adolescents, and children for over 25 years. She completed her masters in counseling at Webster University and did a post-graduate study at the University of Oklahoma in art therapy. Leah received her PhD from the University of North Texas in Counseling and Higher Education with a specialty in play therapy.
