Two micro-practicums on Sundays –  February 7 and March 4. 2018 – 11 am to 3 pm

Workshop Title:  Client Centered Play Therapy:  An In-Depth Exploration

Workshop Description:

This 40 hour workshop will provide participants with a general overview of client-centered play therapy, the history of play therapy and its theorists, child development, and the developmental stages of play.  The workshop will specifically provide participants an in-depth exploration of client-centered play therapy and the basic constructs of the theory.  Direct play therapy experience will be provided for each participant with a non-clinical child with immediate supervisory feedback using the basic skills of client-centered play therapy in a micro-practicum format.  This experience will provide the participant valuable feedback in the learning process of basic client centered play therapy skills.  Ethical and legal issues in play therapy will also be explored.

Methods of Instruction:

Instructional methods for this workshop will include readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, video/film analysis of play therapy sessions, demonstrations, exploratory papers, observation of play therapy sessions, and supervised play therapy sessions through use of micro-practicum.

Session One Title:  History of Play Therapy and the Importance of Play to Healing

January 10, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives:  By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify, compare, and contrast theories and the theorist that shaped the history of the profession of play therapy.
  • Demonstrate understanding of child development
  • Recognize the developmental stages of play
  • Explore 19 propositions in child-centered play therapy

Methods of Instruction:  Lecture, discussion, small group experiences

Session Two Title:  Basic Client Centered Play Therapy Skills

January 17, 2018

Duration:  Four hours

Learning Objectives:  By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate explore basic play therapy skills
  • Practice basic play therapy skills (within group) including tracking, reflection of content and process, facilitating decision making, and returning responsibility
  • Develop understanding of self as a play therapist
  • Explore fears and concerns about conducting play therapy

Methods of Instruction:  Readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, video/film analysis of play therapy sessions, and demonstrations.

Session Three Title:  Basic Client Centered Play Therapy Skills cont.

January 24, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Review and demonstrate basic play therapy skills (with partners) including tracking, reflection of content and process, facilitating decision-making, and returning responsibility.
  • Identify developmentally appropriate toys and materials used in play therapy for both a play therapy room and a traveling play kit.
  • Review importance of play in the therapeutic process
  • Explore research literature about play therapy

Methods of Instruction: Readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, video/film analysis of play therapy sessions, and demonstrations.

 Session Four Title: Reviewing Theory

January 31, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify, compare, and contrast theories used within the profession of play therapy
  • Recognize theories within different formats of play therapy (individual, group, family, school, etc.)
  • Use 19 Proposition to identify how maladjustment occurs in children
  • Explore theory (Jaak Panseek) about circuits of emotion and the importance of connection

Session Five Title: Limit Setting in Client Centered Play Therapy

February 7, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and rationale of therapeutic limit setting.
  • Recognize the importance of the relationship in therapeutic limit setting.
  • Demonstrate the use of ACT model in therapeutic limit setting.
  • Identify personal concerns using limit setting in play therapy.

Methods of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, small group experiences, role-play,  demonstrations.

Session Six Title: Micro-Practicum

Sunday – February 11, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic play therapy skills with non-clinical child volunteers, with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Observe live non-clinical play therapy sessions with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Give feedback about observations of others and self.
  • Identify areas of personal growth for next micro-practicum

Methods of Instruction: Small group experiences, observations, and supervised play therapy experience

Session Seven Title: Play Behaviors and Facilitative Responses

February 21, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify play behaviors.
  • Review understanding of Being With in play therapy
  • Begin to conceptualize client using play behaviors as reference.
  • Explore typical non-facilitative responses in play therapy.

Session Eight Title: Linking Parents to Play Therapy

February 28, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand importance of including parents in treatment.
  • Explore types parent interviews.
  • Identify characteristics of good parenting.
  • Explain play therapy it parents.

Session Nine Title: Micro-Practicum

Sunday – March 4, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic play therapy skills with non-clinical child volunteers, with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Observe live non-clinical play therapy sessions with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Give feedback about observations self and others.
  • Identify areas of growth about play therapy skills.

Session Ten Title: Ethical Issues in Play therapy

March 7, 2018

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Review code of ethics for represented associations of participants as it pertains to children.
  • Identify ethical issues involved in providing play therapy for children and their caregivers.
  • Develop understanding of confidentiality in play therapy.
  • Determine therapeutic termination.

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY:

 You may cancel within 7 days of workshop without penalty, January 3, 2018.  Cancellations after January 3, 2018 will entail a $75 fee until January 9, 2018.  No refunds will be given after January 10, 2018 due to commitments made for your participation by the Institute for Counselor Development and the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts.  Registration fee may be transferred to another seminar or to another person without penalty.

 INSTRUCTOR:

Leah Fowlkes-Miller, MA, LPC-S, LMFT, RPT-S is the owner and founder of the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts in El Paso, Texas.  She has worked with families, couples, adolescents and children for over 18 years.  Leah is a registered play therapist supervisor and has extensive training in art therapy. She completed her masters in counseling at Webster University and did post-graduate study at the University of Oklahoma in art therapy. Leah is presently a PhD candidate at the University of North Texas in Counseling and Higher Education, specializing in play therapy.  Leah participated in Kinder Training research in the public schools, utilizing Child/Parent Relationship training.  Leah is a past president of the Texas Association for Play Therapy and served on numerous national committees for the Association for Play Therapy.
