Eight Friday afternoon workshops – 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Two micro-practicums on Sunday, February 23 and March 8, 2020 – Times to be arranged during the first workshop

Workshop Title:  Child-Centered Play Therapy:  An In-Depth Exploration

Workshop Description:

In this 40 hour workshop, a general overview of child-centered play therapy, including the history of play therapy, child development, and the progression of play development in young children will be provided. Participants will also experience an in-depth exploration of person-centered theory, specifically addressing Carl Roger’s 19 propositions and the importance of gaining understanding of child-centered play therapy through theory. Direct play therapy experiences with non-clinical children will be provided for each participant in a micro-practicum format. This experiential will provide the participant valuable feedback in learning basic child-centered play therapy skills. Ethical and legal issues when conducting play therapy will also be explored throughout the workshops.

Methods of Instruction:

Instructional methods for this workshop will include readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, demonstrations, observation of play therapy sessions, and supervised play therapy sessions.

Session Two Title:  Basic Child-Centered Play Therapy Skills

January 24, 2020

Duration:  Four hours

Learning Objectives:  By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explore basic child-centered play therapy skills
  • Practice basic child-centered play therapy skills, including tracking, reflection of content and emotion, facilitating decision making, and returning responsibility.
  • Develop understanding of self as a play therapist.
  • Explore personal fears and concerns when conducting parent consultations.

Methods of Instruction:  Readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, video/film analysis of play therapy sessions, and demonstrations.

Session Three Title:  Basic Child-Centered Play Therapy Skills cont.

January 31, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Review and demonstrate basic play therapy skills including tracking, reflection of content and emotion, facilitating decision-making, and returning responsibility.
  • Identify developmentally appropriate toys and materials used in play therapy for both a play therapy room and a traveling play therapy kit.
  • Review importance of play in the therapeutic process.
  • Explore research literature about play therapy.

Methods of Instruction: Readings, lecture, discussion, role playing, small group experiences, video/film analysis of play therapy sessions, and demonstrations.

 Session Four Title: Reviewing Theory

February 7, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify, compare, and contrast theories used within the profession of play therapy
  • Recognize theories within different formats of play therapy (individual, group, family, school, etc.)
  • Use 19 Proposition to identify how maladjustment occurs in children
  • Explore theory (Jaak Panseek) about circuits of emotion and the importance of connection with children when utilizing child-centered play-therapy.

Session Five Title: Limit Setting in Child-Centered Play Therapy

February 21, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and rationale of therapeutic limit setting in child-centered play therapy.
  • Recognize the importance of the relationship in therapeutic limit setting in child-centered play therapy.
  • Demonstrate the use of ACT model in therapeutic limit setting during play therapy session.
  • Identify personal concerns using limit setting in play therapy.

Methods of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, small group experiences, role-play, demonstrations.

Session Six Title: Micro-Practicum

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic play therapy skills with non-clinical child volunteers, with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Observe live non-clinical play therapy sessions with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Give feedback about observations of others and self.
  • Identify areas of personal growth for next micro-practicum

Methods of Instruction: Small group experiences, observations, and supervised play therapy experience

Session Seven Title: Play Behaviors and Facilitative Responses

February 28, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify play behaviors.
  • Review understanding of Being With in play therapy
  • Begin to conceptualize child using play behaviors as reference.
  • Explore typical non-facilitative responses in play therapy.

Session Eight Title: Linking Parents to Play Therapy

March 6, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand importance of including parents when conducting child-centered play therapy.
  • Explore types of parent interviews.
  • Identify characteristics of good parenting.
  • Explain play therapy it parents.

Session Nine Title: Micro-Practicum

Sunday – March 8, 2020

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic play therapy skills with non-clinical child volunteers, with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Observe live non-clinical play therapy sessions with immediate supervisory feedback.
  • Give feedback about observations self and others.
  • Identify areas of growth regarding play therapy skills.

Methods of Instruction: Small group experiences, observations, and supervised play therapy experience

Session Ten Title: Ethical Issues in Play therapy

March 13, 2020

Duration: Four hours

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Review code of ethics for represented associations of participants as it pertains to children.
  • Identify ethical issues involved in providing play therapy for children and their caregivers.
  • Develop understanding of confidentiality in play therapy.
  • Determine therapeutic termination when implementing play therapy.

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY:

 You may cancel within 7 days of workshop without penalty, January 10, 2020.  Cancellations after January 10, 2020 will entail a $75 fee until January 15, 2020.  No refunds will be given after January 15, 2020 due to commitments made for your participation by the Institute for Counselor Development and the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts.  Registration fee may be transferred to another seminar or to another person without penalty.

 INSTRUCTOR:

Leah Fowlkes-Miller, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT, RPT-S is the owner and founder of the Counseling Center of Expressive Arts in El Paso, Texas.  She has worked with families, couples, adolescents and children for over 20 years.  Leah is a registered play therapist supervisor and has extensive training in art therapy. She completed her masters in counseling at Webster University and did post-graduate study at the University of Oklahoma in art therapy. Leah received her PhD from the University of North Texas in Counseling and Higher Education, specializing in play therapy.  Leah’s research focused on teaching play therapy skills to teachers utilizing Child/Teacher Relationship Training.  Leah is a past president of the Texas Association for Play Therapy and served on numerous national committees for the Association for Play Therapy.
